11 Rejections...

October 17th, 2025…

I received the rejection results that shaped Your Japa Buddy’s vision from “drive prosperity for grad students” to “train 100,000 researchers in 10 years.”

I have never worked as hard in my life as I did in 2025.

...Let's Debunk The 6 Widely Spread Myths About Research Writing

The bible said “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.”

I’m here to help you set the record straight.

Myth 1

You need big grammar and fancy English to sound like a researcher.

TRUTH: No, you don’t. Your research is already complicated enough. Please don’t make your reader suffer through another layer of unnecessary big English.

You don’t get extra marks for making your advisor read a sentence three times before he can understand what you mean.

If “profound” works, use “profound”, not “sagacious”

If you can say it in 20 words, don’t say it in 60.

Your reader should be able to understand your argument without opening a thesaurus beside your proposal.

Myth 2

You have to finish your research before you start writing.

TRUTH: Writing is part of your research process. When you get an insight, note it. When you read something and have a conflicting argument, write it down.

A research paper is ASSEMBLED…not written.

You assemble the notes from your research process and make them comprehensive

After conducting your research…your writing does not need to follow a straight line. You can start writing from the middle. Preferably, your methodology (this is the easiest to write).

The idea is to document as you go. Okay???

Myth 3

Your first draft needs to be good.

TRUTH: Your first draft is a draft. And drafts are never polished

Your first draft is a brain dump and not your final draft…so it is not meant to be submitted. Striving for perfection is why you feel stuck.

Read your first draft out loud…then trim and strengthen your argument.

Reading your text out loud helps you identify friction in your sentences so you can strengthen it.

I read this sales letter (page) you are reading out loud over 6 times.

As a matter of fact, I sent it to three of my friends for criticism. So you are reading VERSION 7.

Your research paper and/or dissertation has to go through same process

That beautiful final paragraph you’re admiring probably looked terrible in version 1. Okay??? Good.

Myth 4

Every research paper must have a groundbreaking discovery.

TRUTH: Know this and know peace.

You do not need to change the world with your Master’s research.

Also, undergraduate research is different from master’s research

Undergraduate research can validate existing research.
Your Master’s research can be an incremental change.
Your PhD research is a radical change because PhD is for establishing technical know-how and competence in the field.

Let me give you an example…

Your master’s research on cancer can contribute by studying a methodology in a new context.

You don’t need to discover the cure for cancer before your research can be valuable. Your contribution just needs to be clear and useful.

Myth 5

You can never use “I” in academic writing.

TRUTH: This myth has been peddled for so long that people treat it like one of the Ten Commandments.

Well, it depends. Some journals allow first-person/third-person writing, especially when you’re explaining what you did, what you found, or what you argue.

So instead of writing, “The researcher conducted the interviews…”

You can write, “I/We conducted the interviews…”

Journals on Emerald prefer this.

But before you start putting “I” in every sentence of your article… please check the journal guidelines.

Yes, academic writing has rules. But “never use I” isn’t a universal rule.

Myth 6

Once you hire an editor, they will fix your research.

TRUTH: An editor is not a mini Jesus (read: miracle worker).

An editor can fix your grammar, improve your sentences, and your writing flow.

But you know what they cannot fix?

A weak research question.
An incoherent problem statement.
Manufacture data to validate your results.
Create evidence for an argument you failed to support.
Make a bad methodology good.
Elaborate a conclusion your data does not support.

So if your research foundation is weak…an editor cannot miraculously fix it.

Editing will improve your writing but it cannot do your research for you.

This is why you need to get your research process right.

I’ve never written a research paper before. Can I keep up?

Absolutely. I designed this specifically to take you from “Confused” to “Confident.” I didn’t use compled terminologies. It was explained in plain English that you can understand and apply immediately.

How does the "Hiring" part work?

During the 30 days, we will have practical assignments. I will personally review the work of the top performers. Those who show exceptional skill and dedication will be invited to join the Your Japa Buddy research internship. After successfully completing the internship, the 10 best students will be hired as a research editor.

Do I need a laptop for this?

While you can go through the lessons on your phone, having a laptop is highly recommended for the practical research and writing parts. If you don’t have one, you can use a cyber cafe or borrow one for the practical sessions.

Why is it only ₦15,000 if your other programs cost ₦1.5 Million+?

This is my way of giving back and identifying young talent I can work with in the future.

What if I miss a live session?

Don’t worry. All sessions will be recorded and made available on selar. You can access the recording with Deluxe Option at your convenience.

Will I get a certificate at the end?

Yes. To receive a Certificate of Competence from Your Japa Buddy, you need send us proof of your article acceptance in a Q1 or Q2 journal.
